Inhalt: BY TIME STAFFMARCH 27, 2024 8:24 AM EDT When we introduced the Earth Awards last year, our goal was to highlight individuals whose actions have had an indelible impact on global efforts to address one of the most urgent crises facing our planet: climate change.
In the year since, the stakes have only become clearer-2023 was the hottest year the world has ever experienced since records began-and those who have dedicated themselves to this crucial work have doubled down on their dedication. This year's group of honorees are being recognized for their influential leadership, whether on the runway or in the rain forest, in shaping a more sustainable future.

One Man's Quest to Heal the Oceans-And Maybe Save the World
"I don't see a bigger purpose than working to save life on earth," says ecologist and ocean conservationist Enric Sala.
Enric Sala-marine ecologist, conservationist, and ocean advocate-is standing under a life-size replica of a Northern Atlantic Right Whale at the natural history museum in Washington, D.C., and the air outside is smudged with wildfire smoke drifting down from Canada. It's not surprising that Sala wants to talk about the smoke, or about whales. Their poop, however, is an unexpected twist. According to Sala, whale excrement, or, more precisely, the lack of it, has a role to play in the choking miasma that has forced my interview with one of the world's foremost ocean explorers indoors instead of out on a boat.

Inhalt: This week in TIME Magazine's World edition: TIME Magazine
Issue Dated March 13th 2023
When Cate Blanchett was around 5, she wrote a mini essay-saved for years by her mother and unearthed serendipitously during a recent move-envisioning her possible future as an adult: "When I grow up, I would like to be a man. I would still love my family. But I could light a fire and go to work. And when I'm bored being a man, I think I'll just be me."
Blanchett tells this story over tea in Los Angeles, amused by the kid logic behind it. Yet all those half-fanciful, half-practical dreams have come true for her, at least figuratively. She has played a man-more than one, in fact-in movies like Julian Rosefeldt's dazzling 2015 Manifesto and (as the puckish troubadour Bob Dylan) in Todd Haynes' 2007 I'm Not There. Though she seems to take on projects without a lull, in conversation it's evident that even when traveling-she lives with her family in England-her thoughts stay close to home. A teenage son who's looking at universities, a husband, Andrew Upton, with whom she runs the production company Dirty Films: family is her inner orbit, maybe even the sturdy gravitational pull that makes her work possible. And if you think she can't light a fire-well, just look at her.

Inhalt: How TIME Chose Its 2023 List of Next Generation Leaders
One of my favorite stories from TIME's history goes like this: As 1927 came to an end, the editors seized the chance to correct a serious oversight. They had failed to put Charles Lindbergh on the cover to recognize the 25-year-old's remarkable solo flight over the Atlantic, which he'd completed that May. On what was otherwise a slow news week, they gave themselves a mulligan, and for the first issue of 1928 named Lindbergh "Man of the Year," creating what became one of the most iconic franchises in journalism-what we know today as TIME Person of the Year.

Inhalt: Bad Bunny's Next Move
The superstar has bent global pop culture to his will-by refusing to compromise on anything.
In 40 minutes, the former grocery bagger from Puerto Rico will try on outfits worth thousands for the cover of this magazine. In 12 hours, he will be photographed embracing the world's highest-paid supermodel. In one month, he will be staring out onto a sea of 125,000 superfans from the heights of Coachella's main stage.
But right now, Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, who also goes by Bad Bunny, is slouched almost completely horizontally on a green-room couch in downtown Los Angeles, thinking about being with his parents back home in Puerto Rico.
"Outside of that house, perhaps the world is listening and talking about me," he murmurs in Spanish. "But in that house, everything is the same. Nothing has changed. It's beautiful for me to go there and they still look at me with the eyes of, 'Come here, Benito Antonio. The baby. The son.'"
